How to progress over 800m, 1000m and 1500m?
Situation : 1X1000m + 1x600m +1x400m – recuperation 8′ and 6′ between races
Presented most often from the junior category (15-16 years) and this 3 to 4 times over the season. This situation can indeed serve as a reference situation: athletes see the evolution of their progress.
When I propose this situation the first time, athletes always wonder what pace they should adopt for these 3 distances. My instructions:
- for the 1000m: “be at a maximum of 15″ of your personal best”
- for the 600m: “Go fast but don’t forget the 400m behind”
- for the 400m: “give it all away”
Variations: Add a second set or play on recuperation time (1 to 2′ less) …
Here are the times of a 1st year cadet, worth 2’04 in the 800m and under 54′ in the 400m
